Kouji Takayanagi was the son of Tomizo Takayanagi, the former stepson of Sumie Namikaze, the stepbrother of Mitsuko Takayanagi and Kaoru Namikaze, the brother of Ichiro Takayanagi, and the uncle of Achan Takayanagi.

Legacy
After Kouji's funernal, he was buried in the local cemetery of Shikaku Town, Kaoru vows to help the Great Hollow-Human War with her cousin and friends.
Unknown to anyone, he was secretly dugged up by Shadow's Hollow minions and carries his dead corpse to the Knight World. In there, Shadow use his knowledge and technology to rebuild his body as a android with a piece of his Hollow powers and parts that only Shadow can control in time by facing Le Tori in the Second Chunin Exam Saga, Kouji's corpse became reborn as "Sanrui Kagepasu" one of the "Six Paths of Shadow".
